The Colonial Pipeline attack is an ominous reminder of the unique vulnerabilities of manufacturing’s OT environments. In 2022, this sector became the most targeted by cyberattacks. Manufacturing risk amounts to intuitive factors, such as unpatchable legacy systems, or systemic issues, such as third-party contractor risk or the inability to take operational systems down to implement security controls. This presentation will explore these factors and the OT cyberattack kill chain, including scanning, compromise, and lateral movement. Then, it will discuss how federally compliant Zero Trust Architecture can kill the kill chain and frustrate threat actors, ‌stopping attacks before they happen.

Many of these devices run Linux in their controllers.

When it comes to AI, there are signification dangers one should consider at the board/system level, or when moving over to the edge. Malicious attacks are growing more sophisticated, with hackers finding new ways to cause disruption to critical systems. When systems are vulnerable to modification, the very integrity of systems can become compromised.

For Smart Manufacturing Day, I would address how standards and technology such as DICE, TPM, FIM and RIM are crucial to maintaining device integrity, allowing manufacturers to attest relevant data is valid, and encrypting content to avoid illicit modification of the AI whilst in transit.
