Manufacturing is difficult. Increasing demand for critical goods and the shortage of skilled workers required to produce them at scale mean it is becoming even more difficult. The answer to this challenge is further automation, which now appears more achievable than ever given the recent progresses in AI technology. Yet, to this day, AI largely failed to deliver on its potential despite significant investments in data infrastructure and talent. Our experience deploying AI in today’s most sophisticated industry, chip making, indicates 4 main reasons for failure ranging from insufficient model and systems reliability to low output actionability to inefficient team organization.
